On August 25, 2011, Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) President Eugene Czolij met in Kyiv at the Patriarchal residence with the Head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church Kyiv Patriarchate (UOC KP), His Holiness Patriarch Filaret.
Eugene Czolij greeted the Patriarch on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Ukraine's independence and acquainted him with the work of the UWC in defence of human and national rights of Ukrainians in Ukraine and beyond its borders, preserving democratic values in Ukraine and broadening UWC contacts with high-level international organizations.
Also discussed during the meeting were current events in Ukraine, including the pressure being exerted on the UOC KP, and the importance of continued cooperation between between the UWC and the UOC KP.

On August 26, 2011, Ukrainian World Congress President (UWC) Eugene Czolij, together with Ukrainian Canadian Congress President Paul Grod, met in Kyiv withUkraine’s Head of the Prosecutor General’s Department of Investigation of Particularly Important Cases, AndriiKurys.
The UWC President conveyed the dismayof Ukrainians worldwide about the pressure being exerted by Ukraine's government structures on political opponents in Ukraine, and particularly the way in which the court case against former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenkois being carried out. He also focused on the unreasonable arrest of the former Prime Minister and the startling decisionsof the court to refuse Yulia Tymoshenko's requestsfor a reasonable delay to prepare her defence and for medical attention from her personal physician.
Eugene Czolij also emphasized that the UWC would continue to monitor the judicial proceedings of political opponents in Ukraine.

On October 5, 2011, Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) President Eugene Czolij met with community leaders in New York, U.S.A.
Eugene Czolij presented the work of the UWC over the past year and its plans going forward. These include the continued support of Ukraine’s Euro-integration, the defense of human and national rights of Ukrainians in Ukraine and abroad, the AGM decision to open a UWC office in Kyiv and the organizing of an international observer mission to monitor Ukraine’s Parliamentary elections in 2012.
There was also an engaging discussion on how UWC member organizations can most effectively support the work of the UWC and Ukrainian communities worldwide that require assistance.

UWC Urges the International Community to Stand up for Democratic Values in Dealing with Ukraine's Authorities

In a letter dated October 14, 2011, the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) urged the international community to stand up for democratic values in dealing with Ukraine’s authorities. The letter was sent to seventeen high-ranking officials of the international community in response to the conviction and sentencing on October 11, 2011 of Ukraine’s opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko by the Pechersky District Court in Kyiv.
The letter highlighted the concerns expressed by most observers, international leaders and human rights advocates that the trial was politically motivated and did not conform to international standards of fairness, transparency and impartiality. Ukrainian authorities relied on archaic Soviet-style legislation to prosecute former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko for her political decisions.

Ukrainian World Congress President Participated In The Council Of Ukrainian Credit Unions Of Canada Annual General Meeting

On October 15, 2011, Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) President Eugene Czolij participated in the Annual General Meeting of the Council of Ukrainian Credit Unions of Canada. The AGM, attended by twenty six delegates representing six credit unions from Toronto, Winnipegand Saskatoon, was held at the Ukrainian National Federation of Canada centre in Toronto.
Eugene Czolij extended greetings to the delegates, wishing the Council and its president, Olya Sheweli, continued success in future endeavours. The UWC President also informed participants about the work of the UWC in developing Ukrainian community life in the diaspora and defending the human and national rights of Ukrainians in Ukraine and beyond its borders. He also drew attention to the most recent troubling events in Ukraine.

On October 16, 2011, Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) President Eugene Czolij delivered a speech during a commemoration in Montreal of the 69th anniversary of the formation of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army.
Eugene Czolij recognized the veterans of all Ukrainian military formations who fought for Ukraine’s independence. He focused, in particular, on the circumstances which led to the Ukrainian Insurgent Army’s creation and the unique characteristics of its warfare against Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia.
In conclusion, Eugene Czolij highlighted the recent troubling events in Ukraine and emphasized the need for a concerted effort in defence of its statehoodand fundamental principles of democracy in Ukraine.
